Abstract
University research promotion activities often include internally admi nistered research grants to support faculty scholarship and provide se ed money for projects that would lead to subsequent external funding. The study reported here was undertaken to determine whether one such p rogram, the Faculty Research Grant (FRG) program at Memphis State Univ ersity, is a good investment of scarce university funds. The results i ndicate that receiving an FRG has a positive effect on a recipient's a bility to obtain external research dollars in the future. The study al so showed that FRGs are popular with faculty, a factor that assumes mo re importance in times of low faculty morale.
