A 16-year-old, 550-kg Quarter Horse mare with a history of abdominal p
ain unresponsive to treatment was referred to the VeterinarY Teaching
Hospital at Tuskegee University. Physical examination findings and lab
oratory test results suggested the need for exploratory celiotomy, but
the owner declined due to economic constraints. Nonsurgical treatment
was undertaken, but the mare's condition deteriorated and she was eut
hanized. Postmortem examination revealed a duodenal phytobezoar with s
econdary perforating gastric ulcer.
