The mass spectrometric behaviour of some 2-[3-hydroxy-pyridyl]-2-(3H)-
thiazolimine and 1,3,4-thiadiazine derivatives was studied in detail u
nder electron ionizing conditions by means of accurate mass measuremen
ts, deuterium-labelling experiments and metastable ion studies. The re
sultant fragmentation patterns were highly complicated with cleavage o
f the amine bond and of the thiazoline ring. The main differences betw
een the decomposition mechanism of thiazoline and thiadiazine derivati
ves lies in the retro-synthetic ring transformation processes, observe
d in the case of thiadiazine compounds only.
