A Finnigan 8230 mass spectrometer has been converted to a translationa
l-energy-loss spectrometer suitable for double-charge-transfer (DCT) s
pectroscopy. Its performance was investigated by obtaining DCT spectra
when 3 keV OH+ projectile ions interacted with xenon atoms and ethene
molecules. Well-separated peaks were obtained which correspond to the
populating of dicationic electronic states differing in energy by abo
ut 1 eV.
