Infrared spectra of beta-PVDF films under the influence of an electric
field were registered for 13 cycles of field strength. Butterfly-shap
ed hysteresis curves due to dipole orientation changes were obtained f
or the absorbances as well as for the frequencies of the bands at 445
and 510 cm-1. Investigations of alpha-PVDF show considerable changes i
n the spectra after polarization at field strengths of 180 MV/m to 320
MV/m. The absorbance decreases of the bands 218 cm-1 and 616 cm-1 wer
e discussed in terms of a conformation conversion and of an alignment
of the CF2-dipoles in alpha-PVDF.
