A general method which enables one to use D-optimal design to help for
mulate conventional printable coatings with a chosen set of ingredient
s is given. The D-optimality criterion is briefly reviewed and is appl
ied to the formulation process. Using simple polynomials, one builds m
odels to approximate coating properties. Viable models can help formul
ators in, developing and manufacturing coatings. The formulation proce
ss of an actual coating is described in some detail to illustrate the
procedure. Various merits and limitations of modeling with optimal des
igns are also discussed.
