We present a theoretical study of antiresonant waveguides, in cylindri
cal and planar geometry, using leaky mode solutions of the vector wave
equation. General analytical expressions are derived which describe t
he attenuation coefficients of TE, TM, HE, and EH modes of multilayere
d leaky waveguides, taking into account material absorption. These exp
ressions are compared to numerical solutions and found to give very ac
curate results when the leakage loss is low.
