21 specimens of Lepraria lesdainii - for the most part of Central Euro
pe - have been ana-lysed using thin layer chromatography as well as pa
rtly lichen mass spectrometry. The major compound is a triterpene, for
which the name ''lesdainin'' is proposed. The compound is sup-posed t
o be identical with 6alpha-acetoxyhopan-22-ol. Morphology, ecology and
distribution of the species are briefly described.
