CHRONIC DIFFUSE SCLEROSING OSTEOMYELITIS OF THE HUMERUS - NOVEL TREATMENT WITH CALCITONIN

We describe a 51-year-old woman with a 20-year history of pain and swe lling in her left upper arm. Radiographic appearance was suggestive of chronic osteomyelitis but confirmation necessitated surgical explorat ion. A diagnosis of sclerosing osteomyelitis was made on histology whi ch responded poorly to the prolonged antibiotics. She subsequently mad e a dramatic symptomatic and radiological improvement after starting t o take calcitonin, even in low dosage.
