Characterization of an inclusion complex prepared from amorphous groun
d mixtures of heptakis (2,6-di-0-methyl)-beta-cyclodextrin (DMbetaCD)
and benzoic acid was carried out by a sealed heating method. The forma
tion of the crystalline inclusion complex and the variation in physico
chemical properties of the ground mixture were investigated as a funct
ion of heating temperature. On the basis of X-ray diffractometry and F
ourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the crystallization of the gro
und mixture was confirmed to take place at about 135-degrees-C. The cr
ystallization temperature was shifted to lower temperatures and the bo
und molar ratio of benzoic acid to DMbetaCD increased as the mixing mo
lar ratio of benzoic acid to DMbetaCD was raised.
