We describe chemical preparation and crystal structure of ethylene-dia
mmonium cyclooctaphosphate hexahydrate, the first reported example of
an organic-cation cyclooctophosphate. [NH3-(CH2)2-NH3]4P8O24.6H2O is m
onoclinic, P2(1)/n, with Z = 2 and the following unit-cell dimensions
: a = 11.833(2), b = 21.844(3), c = 7.467(2) angstrom, beta = 98.49(3)
degrees. The P8O24 ring anicn is centrosymmmetrical as well as two of
the three crystallographically independent ethylenediammonium groups.
The hydrogen-bond scheme is given.
