The reaction between BaI2 and KNb(OiPr)6 in refluxing toluene yields a
fter crystallisation in the presence of isopropanol to a species which
has been characterized by the usual techniques (elemental analysis, I
R, H-1 and C-13 NMR) and X-ray diffraction as an heterometallic solvat
e BaNb2(OiPr)12(iPrOH)2. This compound crystallizes in the space group
P-1 (triclinic) with a = 10.763(2) angstrom, b = 14.595(5) angstrom,
c = 19.144(10)angstrom, alpha = 97.99(4)degrees, B = 96.69(3)degrees,
delta = 102.04(2)degrees, V = 2879(2) angstrom3, Z = 2 and R = 0.0419
,Rw = 0.0513. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding accounts for the stabili
ty of the solvate.
