Abstract
The paper analyses the causes of error in scatterometer measurements o f the characteristics of the near-surface wind, for a composite distur bance. It is shown that neglecting the effect of swell on the measurem ents may in some cases lead to a doubling of the errors in the measure ments of the parameters of the near-surface wind.
