Abstract
A method for estimating current fields based on solution of the invers e problem for the movement of a passive substance (tracer) is studied. The model involves the transfer equation for tracer anomalies in dive rgent form and the equation of continuity, both integrated over the up per mixed layer of the ocean. An experiment to calculate the surface c urrents in the Black Sea based on satellite images in the IR and visib le bands is discussed.
