A. Klin et Fr. Volkmar, ELECTIVE MUTISM AND MENTAL-RETARDATION, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 32(4), 1993, pp. 860-864
The association of elective mutism and mental retardation is noted. Tw
o cases of elective mutism associated with mental retardation are pres
ented. Both individuals had long-standing patterns of inhibition, shyn
ess, and anxiety manifested by general refusal to talk outside the hom
e, particularly at school. The importance of assessment of intellectua
l functioning and linguistic skills for the establishment of intervent
ion priorities and clinical management is discussed. The possibility o
f the presence of mental retardation in individuals with elective muti
sm should be considered.
