Two new series of fluoroborate glasses have been prepared from the fol
lowing ternary chemical compositions (Na2O+RF+B2O3) with the Sm3+ and
the Dy3+ as the dopant ions. The spectral characteristics of these opt
ical glasses have been examined by measuring their absorption (NIR) an
d fluorescence (Visible) spectra by changing the RF (NaF,NaF+AlF3 and
AlF3) in three different ways in the above ternary composition to veri
fy the effects from the RF content on the spectral characteristics of
the dopants under the UV-radiation from a xenon arc lamp, the Sm3+ gla
sses are found in bright orange colour and the Dy3+ glasses in Greenis
h-Yellow. The values of the stimulated emission cross-sections (sigma(
rho)epsilon) of the fluorescent states of these glasses have been dete
rmined by measuring their emission wavelengths (lambda(rho)) and integ
rated half band-widths (DELTAlambda(rho)) from the Gaussian curves of
the fluorescence transitions.
