The action of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol (BHT) as a scorch retarder in
peroxide vulcanisations of EPDM was studied. With rheometry it was sh
own that the highest scorch retarding efficiency is obtained at a low
molar ratio of BHT to peroxide (1 : 10). A higher ratio and a higher p
eroxide concentration resulted in an increased cure rate. In combinati
on with results from sol-gel analyses, FT-IR spectroscopy, vulcanisate
extract analysis and hot air ageing tests, a reaction mechanism for p
eroxide vulcanisation of EPDM in the presence of BHT was formulated.
