A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 90 sows suffering from th
e metritis-mastitis-agalactia syndrome to determine the efficacy of a
single domain of Voren(R) administered in combination with basic thera
py. The study was conducted using a blind protocol and a placebo was a
dministered to controls. A minimum litter size of 6 live piglets and p
resence of clinical signs of MMA with a minimum rectal temperature of
39.3-degrees-C were used criteria for inclusion to the trial. All anim
als received a basic therapy comprising 2.5 Mio IU Penthacillin intram
uscularly, 1 g chloramphenicol and 0.5 g neomycin sulphate intra-uteri
ne and 20 IU oxytocin intramuscularly. Forty-two sows received 0.02 mg
dexamethasone-21-isonicotinate (Voren(R))/kg bodyweight and the remai
ning 48 sows received a similar volume of a placebo intramuscularly.
