Abstract
NTT has been developing a distributed software development environment
based on UNIX workstations and the TCP/IP protocol, as one strategy
to improve the productivity of software, because the amount of softwar
e is increasing as services become more varied and more advanced. The
backbone network, called CAE-NET, has been installed nationwide, from
Hokkaido to Kyushu, and includes over 4,500 nodes. It incorporates sec
urity features that allow it to be used by subcontractors participatin
g in software development. This paper describes some issues and approa
ches for improving the software development environment, its implement
ation concept, present status, and some results.
