A reduced temperature epoxy formulation for repair of epoxy-graphite c
omposite laminates was characterized. The epoxy formulation comprised
selected high functionality aromatic epoxy resins and a multi-componen
t polyamine curing system containing an elastomeric toughener. Experim
ental results for bonding graphite-epoxy specimens have shown that, co
mpared with a 175-degrees-C commercial film adhesive, the proposed for
mulation has better low temperature shear strength, comparable ambient
properties and lower elevated temperature (120-degrees) shear propert
ies. The epoxy formulation exhibits the same in-plane shear modulus as
the commercial material and a plastic behavior at high shear strains.
Consequently, the fatigue endurance of the epoxy formulation has been
found to be superior to that of the 175-degrees-C commercial film adh
esive.
