In a previous paper, black yeast was found to produce poly(L-malic aci
d) in large yield by fermentation with glucose as the carbon source. B
ased upon characteristic NMR spectra, the primary structure of this po
lymer was elucidated as poly(beta-LO-malic acid) having branched chain
s. Thermal analysis by DSC shows neither T(s) nor T(m) below its decom
position temperature T(d) on the solid state polymer.
