Photogalvanic spectrometry is shown to be a very sensitive method for
monitoring the initial steps of electrodeposition of conductive polyme
rs on ITO surface. On the umnodified or mechanically scratched surface
the first deposition step of poly(3-methylthiophene) is the precipita
tion of highly conjugated polymer. If the ITO surface is modified by b
onding bithienyl covalently, the polymerization seems to continue by e
xtending the length of surface-bound oligomers.
