By bonding with adhesives, the use of organic solvents and hazardous b
inders can be substituted by using 1. less hazardous types of adhesive
s: water-based adhesives, hot-melt or silicone adhesives, 2. adhesives
films or double-sided adhesive tape, 3. mechanical joining or 4. by a
design or construction which avoids joining. Examples of substitution
are given. Organic solvents can be avoided through pretreatment using
waterbased degreasing agents, and by cleaning after bonding using mec
hanical methods. Bonding with adhesives makes repair and recycling of
items and materials difficult.
