A multi-functional task force composed of researchers with chemical, m
aterials testing, and math/computer expertises successfully combined a
robot-assisted mechanical tester with a laboratory information manage
ment system (LIMS) to perform flexural testing of plastics. The succes
sful interfacing with an existing LIMS permitted us to take advantage
of a new technology - laboratory robotics. The structuring of this 'op
erator emulator' system, along with appropriate background information
, is described.
