Abstract
Cheal (1993) misinterprets my original article (Chastain 1992b) as sug gesting that any difference in initial attention effects with peripher al and central precues is due to lateral masking with the former. Inst ead, my article dealt with the influence of lateral masking on the app arent time course of attention build-up with the two types of precue, after attention effects become evident with each.
