A novel and simple approach for optimization of a multiple quantum wel
l electroabsorption waveguide modulator is presented In our approach,
all four of the modulator characteristic parameters (on-off ratio, ins
ertion loss, bandwidth, and driving voltage) are included. Design exam
ples for GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well modulators are presented. T
he accuracy of our model is confirmed by comparison between calculated
and published experimental data.
