Amorphous molybdenum sulfide and polypyrrole-tetrathiomolybdate/molybd
enum sulfide thin films obtained by electrodeposition from aqueous sol
utions of ammonium tetrathiomolybdate and pyrrole + ammonium tetrathio
molybdate, respectively, have been characterized by elemental analysis
, Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infra
red spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our data revealed
that the structure of electrochemically and thermally produced molybd
enum trisulfide are identical but that additional sulfur is also prese
nt in the electrodeposited material. On the other hand, polypyrrole fi
lms grown in the presence of tetrathiomolybdate as the counterion also
contains molybdenum trisulfide. Elemental analysis and X-ray absorpti
on spectroscopy of polypyrrole-tetrathiomolybdate/molybdenum trisulfid
e thin film suggest that 30% of molybdenum is under the MoS42- form an
d 70% is present as MoS3.
