Ms. Hossain et al., IN-VITRO ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF ALKALOIDS FROM THE STEM BARK OF DESMOS-LONGIFLORUS (ROXB), Bangladesh journal of botany, 22(1), 1993, pp. 37-40
The alkaloids isolated from the stem barks of Desmos longiflorus (Roxb
.) Safford were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal proper
ties against twenty-nine bacteria and seven fungi. The alkaloidal mixt
ure showed good antibacterial properties and moderate antifungal activ
ity at a concentration of 100 mug/disc. The minimum inhibitory concent
ration (MIC) of the alkaloid xylopine was 50 mug/ml against Vibrio cho
lerae and 75 mug/ml against Escherichia coli and Shigella dysenteriae
type 5.
