Patterns of morphological variation in Cicer species were determined b
y Metroglyph method which revealed apparently three clusters of one or
more species out of six studied. C. pinnatifidum represented by singl
e strain showed an isolation from the rest of the clusters. Strikingly
the glyph representing strain no. 7 of C. arietinum was distantly loc
ated though it should have belonged to the cluster formed by other str
ains of the same species. Cluster I was comprised of C. arietinum, C.
judaicum and C. cuneatum while cluster II and III were formed by singl
e species namely C. bijugum and C. reticulatum, respectively. The ray'
s pattern on the glyph among the clusters revealed a marked variation
for the presence or absence of rays and mostly inclined rays; horizont
al rays were more or less common among the glyphs.
