Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid bound to a lipid (dioctadecyldimethyla
mmonium bromide) has been used as an immobilized ligand system for ext
racting chromium(III) salts from an aqueous solution. The morphology a
nd nature of the aggregation of the metal-ion-bound lipid-ligand compl
ex has been studied by transmission electron microscopy and differenti
al scanning calorimetry. A strong dependence of the vesicle size on th
e gel crystalline phase transition has been observed and the results a
re rationalized in terms of higher-ordered packing of the large vesicl
es below the phase transition temperatures.
