Two novel tungsten phthalocyanine compouds have been synthesized. Chlo
ro(phthalocyaninato)tungsten(II), (ClPc)W, was prepared by deoxygenati
on of chloro(phthalocyaninato)(oxo)(hydroxo) tungsten(V), (ClPc)W(O)(O
H). Magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that (ClPc)W is diamagnet
ic and (ClPc)W(O)(OH) paramagnetic. EPR data suggests that chlorine is
attached to the isoindole unit of the phthalocyaninato ligand, and no
t to tungsten. These data, together with the chemical analysis, infrar
ed spectra, and visible absorption spectra clearly define the chemical
composition and tungsten oxidation states in these new metallophthalo
cyanines.
