Normal and second derivative ultraviolet absorption spectra of the ker
osene fractions of some Indian crudes have been studied with a view to
exploit derivative signals observed in the fine structure region of a
lkylnaphthalenes for their quantitative analysis. It has been shown th
at the second order differentiation of the normal UV-spectra provides
profiles of resolved and enhanced bilobal signals at characteristic wa
velengths whose magnitudes are proportional to C10, C11, C12 und C13 a
lkylnaphthalene contents normally found in kerosenes. These signals we
re thus utilised for the estimation of the components concerned. The v
alue of the total contents of alkylnaphthalenes, thus obtained in all
the fractions studied were in close agreement with these data which we
re calculated using reference ASTM method D-1840.
