Fuel-cell power stations in the efficiency range of some MW, at presen
t still as demonstration plant, may reach in future an important role
in the local energy supply. As environmentally acceptable technology w
ith high efficiency, an economical use of the fuel cell in the unit co
mbined heat and power station is expected. It is conceivable to use th
e superconductive magnetic energy accumulator (SMES) as large-scale ac
cumulator on a long-term basis, and as medium-scale or small-scale acc
umulator on a medium-term basis, too. Both application cases have the
grid connection through efficiency electronic power converters in comm
on. For this problematic nature, especially interesting in the MW-rang
e, the connections with the power converter/grid interaction are prese
nted.
