A new technique of transferring genes by low energy ion beam has been
reported in this paper. The Gus and CAT (chloramphenicol acetyltransfe
rase) genes, as ''foreign'' genetic materials, were introduced into th
e suspension cells and ripe embryos of rice by implantation of 20-30 k
eV Ar+ at doses ranging from 1 x 10(15) to 4 x 10(15) ions/cm2. The ac
tivities of CAT and Gus were detected in the cells and embryos after s
everal weeks. The results indicate that the transfer was a success.
