For purposes of scientific research, an L-band FEL injector was propos
ed at the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) some time ago [X.L.
Zhai et al., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A296 (1990) 684]. It consists of a
n electron gun, one subharmonic buncher (108 MHz), a fundamental bunch
er (1300 MHz), an accelerating section. a microwave power source and d
iagnostic devices. The design goal was to produce electrons at an ener
gy of 20 MeV at a micropulse current of up to 50 A and a micropulse le
ngth of 10-20 ps. Now the injector (including the buncher) is complete
and testing is under way. This paper describes preliminary results an
d reports the status of the injector.
