The application of the UCSB FEL to the observation of photoconductivit
y in the valence fluctuating substance SmB6 is shown. The photoconduct
ivity of single crystal SmB6 was measured in the region from 30 to 105
cm-1 at 4.2 and 8 K. The FEL intensity dependence of the photoconduct
ivity shows the existence of an energy gap around 100 cm-1. Two kinds
of relaxation decay have been observed at 4.2 K in the weak FEL intens
ity region. The relaxation processes in SmB6 are discussed.
