The treatment of advanced ovarian cancer at the Women's Clinic of the
University of Pecs, Hungary, during 1962-1989 is described in a histor
ical review. The results of 82 patients treated with cyclophosphamide
(C), 83 patients treated with non-cisplatin (CMV or CAV) and 41 patien
ts treated with a cisplatin (CAP) combinations were compared. Progress
ion-free survival was better with the CMV or CAV than with C. CAP was
associated with significantly better remission rates, survival and pro
gression-free survival than the other treatments. Analysis supports th
e prognostic importance of postsurgical residual tumour size. Consolid
ation radiotherapy and maintenance or second line chemotherapy are rec
ommended.
