A rapid method for the separation and determination of cobalt has been
developed and applied to natural water samples. The procedure is base
d on the extraction of cobalt with N-Phenylbenzohydroxamic acid (PBHA)
into chloroform at pH 10. Cobalt is back extracted with HCl, complexe
d with ammonium thiocyanate and the blue coloured complex extracted in
to ethylacetate having maximum absorbance at 640 nm and molar absorpti
vity 1.7 X 10(3) 1 mol-1 cm-1. Effect of the diverse ions upon the lin
ear relationship as conc vs absorbance for co-PBHA-SCN are investigate
d. The cobalt is determined in natural water samples.
