Abstract
Data on 64 press sections of Canadian newsprint and groundwood special ty machines were collected in a 1989 survev and compared with the data obtained in a similar survey in 1981. The two surveys revealed that d uring the interim period, the average machine speed increased by 119 m /min to 749 m/min and the average solids content of the pressed web by 1.5 to 40.9%. Other changes included increased press nip loads, lower usage of chemical pulps and the introduction of multi-roll presses. T he improved press section water removal represents an annual savings o f about 1.2 million tonnes of drying steam.
