Structural modifications produced by mechanical stress in a high energ
y planetary ball-milling machine were studied for various binary or te
rnary oxides with ceramic applications. Phase transformations were sho
wn tor titanium (IV) or zirconium oxide and for zirconium silicate (zi
rcon) that becomes amorphous after lengthy grinding. By mechanosynthes
is, we prepared zircons stabilized with lime and yttrium oxide, as wel
l as new amorphous phases obtained from mixtures of alumina and zircon
powders.
