Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has been used to study quantit
atively the acetylation of monodisperse polystyrene microspheres with
diameters ranging from 7 to 9 mu m. The CH2 stretching infrared vibrat
ion mode at 2921 cm(-1) was used as the internal intensity standard. T
he acetylation extent could be easily measured by comparing the relati
ve intensities of the bands of acetyl group (1678, 1415, 1359 cm(-1))
or the bands due to the para-substituted benzene ring to the band at 2
921 cm(-1) from the calibration curve.
