Md. Medel et al., AN UNDESCRIBED SPECIES OF MERONA (CNIDARIA, HYDROZOA, CLAVIDAE) FROM SOUTHERN SPAIN WITH REMARKS ON OTHER SPECIES OF THE GENUS, Journal of Natural History, 27(3), 1993, pp. 513-519
Presently two species of the genus Merona are known: Merona cornucopia
e Norman, 1864 and Merona operculata Watson, 1978. A hitherto unknown
species is described herein as M. ibera sp. nov., and compared with th
ese two. It has gastrozooids and dactylozooids similar to those of M.
cornucopiae, but its female gonozooids are different, being smaller an
d having the gonophores placed distally. The gonophores contain many s
mall eggs and have a 'button' of nematocysts (microbasic euryteles) at
the tip.
