APPLICATION OF DEUTERATED PAHS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PAHS IN ENVIRONMENTAL-SAMPLES

Deuterated 2- and 3-ring aromatic hydrocarbons were used as internal s tandards for the determination of 2- and 3-ring aromatic hydrocarbons in soil. It is shown that considerable losses of polycyclic aromatic h ydrocarbons (PAHs) during the sample preparation can be monitored by u sing deuterated PAHs as internal standards and the recoveries of these steps can be determined. Thus, more reliable data can be obtained. Ho wever, the similar behaviour of the deuterated and the non-deuterated compounds must be checked for each procedure employed because differen t behaviour can sometimes be observed.
