A retrospective study was carried out on 118 children with penetrating
eye injuries. Fifty-three per cent of those without an intraocular fo
reign body (50/94) achieved a final visual acuity of 6/12 or better, w
hilst 13% (14/108) required an enucleation. Mixed corneoscleral wounds
, vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment were bad prognostic feat
ures. Important principles of management are discussed.
