Graphic symbols are increasingly used for the efficient and language-i
ndependent sharing of information in practically all fields of life. T
he design of such symbols makes special demands on their obviousness,
particularity, independence and unambiguity. This article discusses a
procedure for the drafting of graphic symbols for the description of l
ight-metal extrusion defects. The pictograms thus obtained are used as
a visual support of the users of an expert system which is currently
being developed for the analysis of extrusion defects. They can also b
