S. Xinogalos et al., CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS OF BRONCHO-VAXOM (BV) IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONICOBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY-DISEASE, International journal of immunotherapy, 9(2), 1993, pp. 135-142
Sixty-two adult patients of both sexes with chronic obstructive pulmon
ary disease (COPD) participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled
trial to determine the effects of treatment with Broncho-Vaxom (BV), a
n immunomodulating agent, administered orally in capsule form. Clinica
l manifestations, frequency, duration and severity of acute exacerbati
ons, consumption of conventional medications and serum immunoglobulin
levels were observed over a period of 6 months during the autumn/winte
r of 1990-1991. Treatment with BV produced a statistically significant
decrease, especially after the third month, in the mean score of the
clinical signs, as well as in the cumulative index and in the number,
severity and duration of acute exacerbations. In addition, a significa
nt reduction in the use of conventional therapy was noticed.
