Composites of poly(furfuryl alcohol) grafted onto silica, with differe
nt percentage of grafting, have been investigated by scanning electron
microscopy, elemental analysis and UV/Vis-reflectance spectroscopy. T
he size of the silica particles used for the coating procedure is not
changed till a percentage of grafting to around 30%. A content of poly
mer higher than 35 wt.-% enhances the bonding between the particles du
e to the crosslinking of poly(furfuryl alcohol) on the surface with th
ose in solution leading to the agglomeration of the particles. A gener
al model of cross-linked poly(furfuryl alcohol)-silica composites is s
uggested.
