UNDERSTANDING THE CHANGING REQUIREMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT OF OPERATING EFFICIENCY OF AC MOTORS

The need for higher levels of motor efficiency is increasing significa ntly. Numerous opportunities are available to reach these levels, many of which are being influenced by changes in government regulations, r ebate programs, and industry standards. The purpose of this paper is t o update users on the opportunities available to achieve higher perfor mance levels and to summarize those activities that are driving these higher levels. The impact of adjustable-frequency drives will be inclu ded. A summary forecasting the future required levels and the method o f demonstrating compliances is provided. The relationship and tradeoff s between efficiency and power factor will also be addressed.
