GAMETOGENIC CYCLE OF THE CHILOE SCALLOP (CHLAMYS-AMANDI)

The gametogenic cycle of the Chiloe scallop Chlamys amandi from Hueihu e Bay, Chiloe Chile, was examined for one year. Chiloe scallops were c ollected at 4-5 week intervals between October, 1989 and December, 199 0. Histological sections of the gonad were prepared and the gonadal in dex was determined. A semiannual spawning cycle was observed; i.e., sc allops were in an active or ripe stage throughout most of the year. Sp awning and spat were observed in conjunction with high food availabili ty.
