The degradation of non-phenolic beta-1 and beta-O-4 dimeric lignin mod
el compounds, when catalyzed by lignin peroxidase, is discussed based
on published experimental results. The previously neglected but fundam
ental differences in the reactions between beta-1 and beta-O-4 models
are explained in detail. A novel C(alpha)-C(beta) cleavage mechanism i
n the beta-O-4 compounds is presented taking into account the resonanc
e forms after one-electron oxidation involving the intramolecular tran
sfer of the cation radical center to the C(beta)-ether oxygen.
